A lawsuit seeking the removal of Usman Alkali Baba as the Inspector General of Police IGP was dismissed by Judge John Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The judge ruled that the IGP’s retirement from the Nigeria Police Force had nothing to do with his appointment since the four-year term is sacred in a lawsuit brought against President Muhammadu Buhari and four other individuals by activist Michael Idoko.

Judge Omotoso cited Police Act 2020 Section 7(6), which set the term of office for any Inspector General of Police at four years, and determined that the plaintiff, who identified herself as a social activist, lacked authority to bring the lawsuit.
As the plaintiff failed to show that he had any peculiar or special interests over and above those of other Nigerians, Justice Omotoso characterised him as a busybody and meddlesome interloper. He also noted that the plaintiff was not a serving police officer who was qualified for appointment and that he had never applied for the position of IGP and been rejected.
The lawsuit was later dismissed against the plaintiff without assessing any fees.
Idoko filed the lawsuit to contest the validity of the IGP’s continued employment in the position after completing his term with the help of his attorney, James Onoja (SAN).
