When Governor Hope Uzodimma invited Buhari to Owerri, Imo State, to commission some of her administration’s projects, Buhari accused the elite of not giving Nigeria enough thought. He added that while his administration has done “extremely well,” those who should be praising it for its accomplishments have shied away from doing so.

He added that despite receiving huge profits from crude oil, his forerunners did not improve the nation’s infrastructure.

To be very honest with you, I blame the Nigerian elite for not giving our nation enough thought.

“I want people to investigate the Central Bank and the NNPC. Between 1999 and 2015, when we arrived, the average production was 2.1 million bpd. Nigeria was making 2.1 million times more than it was now, but take a look at the infrastructure—the roads, the railroad—everything was all but destroyed. Power, we’re still having difficulty.

“But when we came, unfortunately, the militants were unleashed, production went down to half a million bpd. Again, unfortunately, the cost of petroleum went down from $28 to $37.”

He added that Boko Haram militants had previously dominated local governments in Borno State before he took office in May 2015, but that situation is now history.

“Look at the problem in the North-East, check with anybody from Borno or Adamawa, how many local governments were in the hands of the government and how many were in the hands of Boko Haram? Fraudulent people, whoever they are, are fraudulent! But now, go and ask the hardworking governor of Borno State, a very hardworking governor. Federal Government is in charge now.

“In terms of time and resources, this administration has done extremely well. I have to say it because those who are supposed to say are not saying it. I don’t know why,” the President said.

For over 13 years, Nigeria has been embroiled in an insurgency war. The rebels have kidnapped hundreds of schoolchildren and other vulnerable people. The Boko Haram terrorist organisation, whose branch known as the Islamic State in West Africa Province has recently carried out vicious atrocities, has also claimed lives in bomb explosions.
