The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on strike for five months. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced it will continue with its planned protest in support of that strike and that preparations were being made for an orderly, statewide demonstration.
Comrade Ayuba Wabba, president of the NLC, said that the protest scheduled to begin on July 26, 2022, would not be postponed and said that it was intended to draw attention to the hardship of the parents of those youngsters whose futures were being jeopardized.
The unresolved strike, according to Comrade Funmi Sessi, the NLC’s Lagos State Council chairperson, could negatively impact Nigeria’s educational future.
She explained that her team had come to request cooperation from the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN), saying that the need for media attention would be crucial in addressing the problems at hand.
According to Sessi, the council is on the verge of mobilizing primarily in order to defend the interests of students and young among the general populace.
“Our planned protest is not mainly for ASUU and other unions who are on strike, but to rescue our students who are now going into different vices since they have been forced to stay at home and also to fight for other youth whose educational future is being truncated by the inactive attitude of Federal Government,’’ she said.
