The Grammy Awards have announced a number of changes for next year. The most noticeable change includes dropping the term “urban” from some award categories. The term “urban” has been catching a lot of controversy recently. Some record labels such as Republic has banned the term altogether within its business dealings.

Harvey Mason Jr., chairman and interim CEO of the Recording Academy, said in a statement that major rules and guidelines have been introduced for the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards “to ensure the Grammy Awards are inclusive and reflect the current state of the music industry”.
The Recording Academy announced on Wednesday 10th June, 2020 that the best urban contemporary album prize will be renamed best progressive R&B album ahead of next year’s ceremony as part of the Organization’s “commitment to evolve with the musical landscape”.
The renaming of the urban category is the latest development in the entertainment industry which reflects Black Lives Matter – related initiative prompted by the death of George Floyd.
