Some road users in the Awka metropolis have praised the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) sector’s quick involvement in Anambra for providing relief to road users.
On Tuesday in Awka, a NAN correspondent observed the source of constant traffic bottlenecks on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway’s Amawbia bypass axis, and discovered that the issue was created by some police officers stationed on the route.
Mr. Mike Okolie, a bus driver, expressed concern about the daily traffic gridlock on the road, which he claims has a bad impact on his business.
Despite the fact that some of the roads are in poor condition, Okolie claims that the main reason of traffic congestion is the actions of police officers on the road.
“The officers just stand on the road, stop every car that passes, and demand money from some drivers while checking their papers,” he said.
The bottleneck lasted until the FRSC men arrived and seized control of the traffic, according to Okolie.
He requested that the state Commissioner of Police and the Commissioner of Transportation investigate the officers’ actions.
Mr. Kennedy Agu, another motorist who travels the route to Nnewi, claims that the police officers’ traffic has negated the purpose they were asked to be on the road in the first place.
According to Agu, police officers do not exercise any discretion when performing their duties because every bus that passes by must be searched. requiring the drivers to pay a fee
“The intimidating process is too much. They even take people’s phones or query them on why they are making phone calls while approaching the checkpoints,” he said.
He also praised the officers from the FRSC who arrived to help with traffic flow.
As soon as the FRSC police took over, traffic congestion vanished, according to Agu.
Mrs. Pamela Igwe, a frequent road user along the axis, called on the government to investigate the conduct of law enforcement agencies so that businesses and movements are not hampered.
Miss Chisom Chiadikaobi, who runs errands on the road, said she left home for Onitsha around 10 a.m. to pick up a parcel and had been stuck in traffic for two hours.
“Originally if the road had been free, I should be rounding up my trip in Onitsha and be coming home. It is really worrisome to experience such horrible delays,” she said.
