In an exclusive interview the President granted Channels TV reporters, the President admitted having someone in mind to succeed him. But, he however stated that he would leave the person anonymously to avoid sudden assassination or elimination of the President’s choice. Particularly, this statement of Mr President is quite weight, and also captures the nation’s security reality. In addition, the grave statement also exposes how most of our political elite are desperate to maintain or grab power.

Nigeria, truly, is fully in the eve of general elections. And, even though the country’s electoral body (INEC) has yet to published the timeline for the 2023 general elections in view of awaiting the possible implementation of amended Electoral Bill, many and various political groups have commenced intensive consultations across the country and to somr prominent members of the nation in view to sell the candidacy of their masters to these eminent personalities.

Earlier on, in January, some individuals also paid a special visit to the President in his Presidential Villa to apprised him their presidential aspiration and gave assurance to consolidate on the untainted legacy his Presidency. However, the President offered and urged these individuals to widen their consultations to the people populace as the power belongs to the people. Evidently, there is a lesson in that assertion by the President to learn by political power seekers.

Meanwhile, there has been tension in the air on who will occupy the nation’s seat of power come 2023 when the tenure of current occupant elapses. The Southeast are clamouring for power for the fact that it is their turn to rule the country. And for national equity, justice and fairness, this writer supports the gentlemen’s agreement of power rotation, just as competence and capability are also crucial. Notwithstanding, some influential politicians from the Southwest and North have not come in shortage to declare their interest in the Presidential race. In fact, some are currently under pressure of their loyalists and sycophants to their hats into the ring. However, we have seen banners, flyers and campaign posters of different individuals who claimed vying for the most coveted political position in the country.

Among all these patriotic individuals and others still in count, it is undisputed that one will emerge as current President’s successor. And I will not fully agree that the President wouldn’t have much interest on who takes over power after him. As a party leader of the ruling party APC, the President would surely have a preference and choice on who he will like to succeed him, as least, for the person to emerge as his party flag – bearer. It would be a matter of concern to the President to identify his prospective successor because at his detriment, when he leaves power only the the person can choose either to consolidate on President’s legacies or expose his skeletons.

Nevertheless, as Mr President decided to conceal the Identity of his chosen successor, the writer, however, can read through the mind of Mr President and draw a conclusion on Mr President’s preferred candidate.

First, President Buhari who himself is a crusader of anti-corruption policies, would never overtly given support or endorsement to anyone with high-level of corruption allegation or any track record of such. Buhari, as the head of government, outright frown on corruption cases, and this is the major success of his administration. President Buhari who hardly fires members of his government, but in any occasion when he makes the move, it is because of traceable corruption allegations. Think of Babachir David Lawal, Ibrahim Magu, or any others, their sack was due to corrupt practices. As the President would not condone or indulge members of his cabinet in corruption, likewise, he could never prefer anyone with corruption tendency.

Moreover, President Buhari has often been accused of nepotistic and tribalistic attitude. Yes, he does always favour his close allies within the ambit of his capacity. President Buhari is someone who is closely sensitive to the people he chooses to delegate powers to. No matter what, he usually goes extra miles to ensure his associate or trusted individual performs function on his behalf. Check the military chiefs and any other governmental agencies, people of closer relationship with are are in the capability. And this trait would not be jettisoned by Mr President in selecting/ choosing his candidate.

Having these mindsets of President Muhammadu Buhari, I can authoritatively tell you the choice of Mr President would not be any strange or corrupt individuals. I think you too could make conclusion on the ultimate candidate of Mr President, couldn’t you?
