The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a statement on Monday in response to claims on social media that thousands of its trained ad hoc personnel who will oversee the Anambra State Governorship election on November 6 have resigned.
This could be linked to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) threatening that unless Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is released by the federal government by November 4, 2021, there will be no election in Anambra State.
IPOB has also vowed to enforce sit-at-home orders from the 5th to the 10th of the month, except on Sundays, till Nnamdi Kanu is released.
According to the bogus claim, the ad-hoc employees allegedly returned tables, chairs, and election kits supplied by the electoral body to the INEC offices in Awka, the state capital, in their huge nimbers.
The ad-hoc personnel is also said to have requested that their names be removed from the list of those to conduct the vote by the INEC.
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the country’s military chiefs to guarantee that the governorship election in Anambra State on November 6th takes place at all costs.
IPOB has been warned by stakeholders in the state, including the state government, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, and lawyers, not to truncate the upcoming election since it would further erode the state’s and Ndigbo’s economic fortunes.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) INEC in Anambra State, Mr. Reginald Onyeukwu told ThisNigeria on the telephone that “There was no such thing as the resignation of any Adhoc staff in the state.”
Onyeukwu explained that “The election will go on as scheduled and we are ready for smooth conduct of the exercise. Nobody trained as Ad-hoc staff has resigned, we train all the ad-hoc staff in primary or secondary schools and we did not give them tables or chairs. It is fake news; I am just hearing it for the first time. There is no such thing as a mass resignation of INEC ad-hoc staff.”
Political parties, on the other hand, are optimistic, holding campaign rallies in several localities and 21 local government districts across the state.
The goal is to meet the INEC deadline for all parties’ campaigns before the dramatic struggle next month.
