The Lagos State Government says it is discussing with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, to incorporate tanker drivers into the call up system as one of the key solutions to the incessant gridlock at the nation’s premier port in Apapa area of the State.
Currently, flatbed trucks are operating on a call up system called “ETO” as part of concerted efforts to ease gridlock along wharf and Apapa port roads.
Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde made this known while rendering account of stewardship of his Ministry in the last one year as part of activities marking the two years anniversary of the current administration in the State.
Dr Oladeinde announced that the State Government has embarked on the reconstruction of the Bola Tinubu truck park with additional hectares to accommodate the trucks.
On measures already implemented to check traffic gridlock and ensure security, Dr. Oladeinde stated that Lagos had introduced articulated and allied vehicle number plate to curb the activities of truck drivers who cause accidents and abscond, while a 30-day temporary vehicle tags are available for new vehicles right from the Port to check the usage of such for robberies and other crimes.
Dr. Oladeinde said that Government had been carrying out continuous training and rehabilitation of commercial drivers who contravene traffic laws to further ensure smooth and safe motoring experience for comutters in Lagos.
