According to Mohammed Auwalu, the village head of Gidan-Magana, who confirmed the occurrence to reporters, the deceased’s bones have subsequently been interred according to Muslim rituals.

He said: “It happened on Wednesday morning when the boat was trying to cross over to a nearby Badiyawa village. The boat hit a tree inside the water and it capsized with all the passengers on the boat. Six were, however, rescued.

“The victims have since been buried according to Muslim rites. The remaining six survivors have been conveyed to the General Hospital in Shagari where they are currently receiving treatment,” the village head told Vanguard in Sokoto State.

Also confirming the accident, Nasiru Ahamed, Director-General of Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, told reporters that the agency received a report of a boat accident in Shagari Local Government and collaborated with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to visit the area and assess the situation.

In response to the disaster, the secretary of Shagari Local Government Area, Mas’oud Shagari, stated that over 26 dead have been rescued from the river, while the hunt for survivors and lifeless remains continues.
