Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State and a presidential candidate in 2023, has claimed that some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) do not deserve to be on the party’s ticket.
He added, without naming names, that such individuals left the party in 2015 after it lost the presidential election, while others in the same group fought against the PDP to install President Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress’s nominee (APC).
Wike is thought to be referring to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, both of whom are running for the PDP presidential ticket in 2023.
Wike told party delegates in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, that he has always been with the party and encouraged them to give him their support.
“The issue is, who are those who made PDP to lose election in 2015 that today we are suffering? Today, we are in opposition and trying to take power back.
“But see what the country has been turned into. Who are those who told Nigerians that President Buhari is a saint, that President Buhari will salvage Nigeria. What is their sense of judgment. Who are those aspirants who abandoned PDP, betrayed PDP and went to support President Buhari?,” Wike stated.
The Rivers State Governor also took aim at President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, claiming that the country has been plagued by insecurity under his watch and that many Nigerians are being slain on a daily basis.
“Now we are suffering,” he said. Every day, people pass away. Over 1000 people were slain in Kaduna between January and March. There have been so many kidnappings.”
As a result, Wike urged Nigerians to exercise extreme prudence when electing their next leader in 2023.
