Segun Adeniyi, a former presidential spokesman, has cautioned Nigerians against choosing politicians based on their feelings ahead of the next elections in 2023.

The Platform: A Better Nigeria Is Possible, an event organised by the Covenant Christian Centre to commemorate Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Day Anniversary, was where Adeniyi, who also serves as the Chairman of ThisDay’s Editorial Board, gave the warning.

He praised the Covenant Christian Center for organising the programme and stated that Nigerians will have the chance to change the narrative when they cast their votes in the upcoming election in February.

A number of micro and macroeconomic indices have gotten worse under the present government, the ex-presidential spokesman bemoaned.

He mentioned the Federal Government’s fiscal deficit, which reached N3.09 trillion in the first quarter of 2022, as one of them.

“According to the analysis, Nigeria’s total debt stock climbed by 439 percent between December 2011 and December 2021, while the domestic debt component increased by 242 percent”.

“The foreign component increased by 1,689 per cent from N885 billion to N15.8trillion just within the period of a decade.

“Within the same period, Federal Government borrowing from the Central Bank of Nigeria increased by 7,000 per cent to N17.4 trillion,” he added.
